CONSULTANT & COACH
Consultant & Coach
When I began my career, I worked as a business and education journalist, developing an understanding of the larger forces at play in both fields while also focusing on the smaller stories created by those forces’ influence. This experience has traveled with me through my master’s studies in teaching and my doctoral work in and around fiction. As a result, I am uniquely situated to consult in a variety of contexts.
In secondary and post-secondary educational settings, I can partner with educators and administrators in developing vertically aligned curriculum, school-wide planning that increases and improves standards-based writing instruction across departments, as well as coaching faculties toward fostering more creative and collaborative cultures. I am also keen on examining established systems and identifying ways in which the story of their shared work must be edited to create a more effective work environment, as well as teaching administrators and faculty members storytelling techniques for use in everything from performance evaluations to accreditation reports.
In professional settings, much of my research has revolved around finding a balance between creativity and expediency, designing effective collaborative teams and workflow in face-to-face or remote environments, and in the principles of communicating an organization’s story well to both internal and external audiences. Further, I am available to coach professionals toward clearer, more effective communication in their written products and employers how to better prepare for, manage, and leverage the work of interns they take on.
On an individual basis, I am also available for one-on-one coaching with writers with projects ranging from telling your story in fiction, an essay, memoir, on a blog, or—for companies and nonprofits—in professional texts ranging from memos to mission and vision statements to the homepage of a website.
"Mike took my scattered ideas and drew out a logical path using my own thoughts. He made sense of my confusion and showed me I had a much better grasp of my dissertation than I thought. He also took my many calls of desperation and reminded me of my worth as an academic and a writer. Mike's name will definitely have a place in my acknowledgements."

"Clark is an ideal consultant on just about every kind of creative work: he's quick to understand the creative impulse behind the project, to assess various shapes the work could take, and to offer assistance that leaves you feeling like you are the one bringing the project to life. He brings a wealth of knowledge in both the field of publication and in the world of literature, and most importantly he coaches in a way that makes my work sound more like me."
